We’ve Got A Blogspot Down!

An in-China Internet user’s relationship with the Chinese powers that be is a precarious one at best.

Really, using the Internet here is a bit like going to an all-you-can-eat buffet. You go one week and they’ve got that great seafood salad, but when you return the following week, the salad’s gone… oh! But they’ve got roast beef. Mmmm… all I can eat roast beef… salad forgotten. A couple weeks later the damn roast beef’s gone and we’re sans salad too! They’ve put out some jello casserole with caught-in-suspension macaroni… but it looks like no one’s touched it since senior’s day.

Really. The BBC site blinks on and off; Wikipedia was off, then on, then off and then on again. Now, after a few months of having Blogger/Blogspot blogs unblocked… they’ve gone the way of the roast beef. Sure, they can be accessed easily enough through Anonymouse or Tor, and most of the Blogspot sites I read publish full RSS feeds anyway… but still. What a pain in the ass. So Meg, J., Steve, Stephanie or Chris – which one of you pissed off the powers of the buffet?

  1. Hah! I had a site where I posted pictures for the people back home to see. It was on a USA server as well. have not been able to access or update for weeks now! But they can still get it back home. iPowerWeb is the host in case you’re interested!

  2. @Yokie: Never heard of iPowerWeb… but sounds like localized blocking. Have you tried accessing it via proxy?

@J: Alright.. you’re off the hook. This time 😉

@Phil: Not sure what to tell ya… all those sites you linked to would explain why I can’t access Blogger blogs – particularly if it is just an outage. However, I can access them all just fine with a proxy on. That tends to lead me to believe it’s being blocked. Really I don’t know.

I’m pretty much done trying to figure out how/when stuff is blocked in China and when it’s just the server doing something stupid. Considering I scared the shit out of Maggie late last night when I sat up in fever-induced hysteria and ripped off my shirt, shouting “bugs! bugs!”… I should not be asked to pass informed decisions on anything right now…. damn illness.

  3. Well, I may have said one or two things I shouldn't. I had a post last week where I mentioned T-i-b-e-t and that thing that happened the day after June 3 in the middle of Beijing way back when, with a YouTube video linked on that one. If that did it, well, sorry guys.

  4. Well, maybe it's the internet itself that doesn't like me. I should have a comment above here, but it doesn't want to appear. Maybe I really did get on someone's bad side.

  5. Thank God I'm not the only one. As for the prospect of little ol' me being your impediment to the all you can eat buffet Ryan, you have to ask yourself, "don't they just put the cheap less-than-gourmet leftover food on the buffet anyway?" think about it, and I hope you get better soon!
