Oh, you’re talking about the country of Africa

Even after defeat, Governor Sarah Palin continues to make news – and not in regards to a preemptive 2012 bid like some had assumed, but as (always) being a complete idiot.

A number of unnamed McCain campaign aides have come out since the Republican defeat Tuesday anonymously criticizing that:

  • She had $150,000 spent on her clothes by the RNC
  • She was fooled by a Canadian comedian pretending to be the French president
  • She didn’t know Africa was a continent, not a country
  • She did not know which countries were covered by the North American Free Trade Agreement

In response she shot back that the criticism was “cruel and it’s mean-spirited, it’s immature, it’s unprofessional, and those guys are jerks.” To everyone’s surprised she didn’t call them poo-poo heads.

She then went on to say:

“So, no, I think that if there are allegations based on questions or comments that I made in debate prep about Nafta, and about the continent versus the country when we talk about Africa there, then those were taken out of context”

Ah… it was just taken out of context. Ok, that happens all the time. I mean, Republican Jerks and the Liberal Media Elite always do that. Wait, wait, hold up. Did you say “the continent versus the country when we talk about Africa” ?

Umm, Mrs. Palin. This isn’t Australia. There is no “the country” of Africa.

And in case it happens that you come across this post, let me take this opportunity to explain that South America is, in fact, a continent, and not the place where gators and the Confederates come from.

  1. I think these stories from American newspapers are ridiculous, an unnamed source supposedly has said these things and we have no way of knowing if they are even true. What ever happened to the standard of print media where you needed 2 confirmed sources? I really have to wonder if these things ever happened or some staffer thinks Palin hurt MCCain so he or she is “getting Palin back” for hurting his or her candidate. Just my thoughts as an Obama supporter.

  2. @Kellen: That’s not what she said, and she’s got every reason to be clear on the point.

@Nik: I agree – if it’s an extremely sensitive or dangerous thing, I understand the “anonymous source” thing, but in this situation – the news outlets are selling rumours. It’s sad. That aside though, she sort of validated their claims, accredited or not, with her rebuttal.

  3. I always hate to see people getting beat-up for their lack of public speaking ability. I make bigger mistakes than that talking to a group of twenty. I shudder to think what I would say under that kind of pressure.

  4. @Luke: Watching people in embarrassing situations makes me feel hugely uncomfortable. It was painful to listen to Palin be made a fool of with that Nicolas Sarkozy gag.

And if it was just you or me, I’d say the people doing the picking-on were just assholes. I mean, who are we? But when you’re one elderly Maverick away from being the most powerful person in the world – able to create war or annihilate any country on the planet – public scrutiny, overly harsh or not, is an absolute must.

I’m sure that as a person, Mrs. Palin is an alright woman. I might not agree with her politics, but that’s never stopped me from liking other people. But as a person with power, shivers… cold, sweaty shivers.

  5. yeah i highly doubt she meant south africa too. i just don’t want to believe someone with so little knowledge about the world got that close to the whitehouse.

  6. it needs to be said. Someone needs to go there. So I’ll do the dirty work and take the heat for it: Sarah Palin is a cunt.

    Thank you.
