Frigin’ cool interactive Chinese city maps – including Suzhou

Shanghai Oriental Pearl TowerMags and I are heading for a rare vacation down to Hangzhou this weekend, and as such have been trolling around the travelweb looking for sights to see, hotels to stay at and maps of the area.

It was this last item that lead me to revisit EDuShi (E-City). A few weeks back Rich (All Roads Lead to China) pointed me to the site’s Shanghai map and I was blown away, and am now even more impressed that they have most major cities in the country covered – including Suzhou!

Anyone that was a fan of Simcity will immediately warm to the style of EDuShi’s maps, as they definitely have that Sim-like quality about them. The zoomable maps offer an impressive amount of detail, with even things like neighborhoods and communities labelled (my old place, Yu Lan Xin Cun, is labelled).

The maps are in Chinese, but as streets and places are some of the easiest Hanzi to read, this isn’t so much a problem (still, eDuShi, if you’re listening – an English version would be fan-frigin-tastic). The other downsides to the maps is that if you are looking for a place outside of the city centre, you may be out of luck. Additionally, for whatever reason, their orientation seems to be a bit random, and no scale is given.

Still, all in all, for a map lover like me, I think their damn cool.

  1. Dude, that is awesome. Just poking around their Beijing map, though, I do notice a few, albeit minor, inaccuracies. They have a regular-looking intersection instead of Jinsongqiao on the East Third Ring, for example, and closer to my home, they perpetuate the myth that there is a public road bisecting the BeiGongDa campus and haven’t caught up with the fact that the hotel on the southwest corner of our campus and the Olympic badminton and rhythmic gymnastics venues on the southeast corner have been completed. I could probably find more if I tried. Anyways, nitpicking quibbles aside, that is a cool resource.

  2. Best I can figure, they’ve just taken a Google Map and then texturized it with their own artwork. So, depending on the age of the Google Map (which seem to range quite heavily here in Le Chine), you’ll get a lot of unbuilt areas that were finished long ago.

I just like the pretty colours 🙂

  3. I love it! I’m a map fiend too, but can’t really read any hanzi (yet) so I can’t figure anything out. Do you know if the Suzhou map includes the SIP?

  4. It cuts off at about Xinghai Jie, and as I live east of there, that sorta sucks, but I’m sure they’ll improve it over time – with the amount of construction going on in SIP it might be tough to keep up though.
