Burger King in Suzhou?

After a night out at the Shamrock, Suzhou’s defacto Irish pub, surrounded by fellow non-Asian faces most of which are rattling on in English, it’s sometimes easy to forget where you are.

This is likely why, while sipping some post-closing brew at a little canal-side gazebo (Suzhou’s cool that way) around the corner that a bit of garbage almost went without notice.

Sitting nearly as unassumingly as myself and my fellow inebriated companions was your everyday, garden-variety fast food take-away cup. However, it was the logo that, again making it closely kindred to us drunk laowai, made it stick out.

To my three readers in Suzhou, has Burger King opened up shop in our fair city? Or is some devious Shanghai Ren playing a horrible horrible joke on me – taunting me with their easy access to bacon double cheese burgers.

  1. My fellow Jiangsu-er, our fair captal, Nanjing, has not one…but 2! (I have yet to confirm the second one apparently opening in Xinjiekou though…)
I was a vegetarian for years before I came to China and although I now eat fast-food, it damn well better be flame broiled!

  2. I’m with ya man. Was a veggie for 8 years prior to China (not directly prior, but prior none-the-less).

I feel for the vegetarians in this country, of which I’ve met quite a few. I think “no meat please” has a lot of interpretations in Chinese.

Veggieness aside, I’m jealous… two! We better have one.

  3. Typical Welland Friday night, drinks at a local dive, followed by post dive drinks, followed by a greasy burger from the King lmao

  4. If there is a Burger King in Suzhou and it hasn’t had its official grand opening yet I’m suggesting us foreigners stage a Star Wars style camping out line waiting for it to open. Once the location is confirmed I will bring my sleeping bag and lawn chair

  5. @Amanda: Coming back from St. Kitts or NF at 3 a.m. and eating poutine – is there anything better?

@AL: I’ll bring the beer and the travel Go game ;-).

  6. I’m guessing if there was one in Suzhou it would be somewhere prominent so you’d have stumbled across it already. And you’d probably see more “evidence” than just a lone coffee cup.

Their offices (in Shanghai) are in my building (unless they’ve moved since) maybe I’ll pop up and ask them for you ….

  7. Good news, fast food lovers. My mate in Shanghai is shortly moving to Jiangsu to oversee the Subway sandwich restaurant placement throughout your fair province.

  8. Burger King in Suzhou? Good question! I don’t know the answer, but there was none 5 years ago, that’s for sure! Will be one in SIP? So I’d be able to walk there from home.
I fear BK will be another over-rated US fastfood chain that my fellow Chinese would have to wait in queues to get a seat in there just like what you could see out side Pizza Hut restaurants a few years ago, not sure if the queueing is still happening.
