A Lost Laowai Diggin’ For China

Ok, this is jumping the gun a bit as an “official announcement” of my new site, but I need some visitors to flesh it out a bit.

Basically, I’ve created a new site designed to help foreigners who are coming to or just arrived in China. It focuses on day-to-day living (money, toilets, culture, etc.), language (just the basics), travel info. and ESL info.

LostLaowai.com

It’s horribly lacking in content, as it’s a lot to undertake for just one guy. But it’s getting there. And this is where you come in, my faithful readers (or not so faithful… blogsluts). The site’s sections are all hooked up to a Wiki and a Forum for each topic, meaning the information should stay fresh and dynamic as anyone can add to these two areas. So, go check it out and if you see something you can add to – please do so.

The main reason for this post (the above stuff was just a preamble really) is that I’ve added a cool new feature to the above site called The Hao Hao (好好) Report, which may be familiar with those of you that frequent the popular Digg.com site. Basically it’s a way for all us blog/news readers to post and rate links to good blog posts or news sites. Read a good story? Insightful news article? Funny commentary about China? Register (it’s quick and free) and post it at…

The Hao Hao Report

I know the name is kinda lame… but it’s the best the gnomes could come up with. I don’t pay them much. There’s likely going to be some things added, and some things taken away… but it’s a start. Go check it out, and please… leave a link. I need to populate the sucker!

  1. “I’m a Hao Hao, yer a Hao Hao, wouldn’t you like to be a Hao Hao too?”

Just working up a little Hao Hao jingle. Oh, btw, I’m Dave Elmo over on Hao Hao…..I added an article and it seems to have gone AWOL.

    hmmm.

    db

(p.s. total bizjack about the Oilers….(evil laugh)

  2. Hey db, I noticed at the third step of “story submission” it appears that you’re all finished, but it’s actually one last confirmation that everything is good… you have to click “submit” at that step.

If you did all three steps, I just don’t know. I’ve submitted a bunch of sites and they’ve all worked. If you’ve got a minute, try it again.

And as for the jingle… sweet! Should we ever come out with a commercial, expect a call ;-).

  3. Hi, I came across your blog through the China Bloggers list. I just wanted to say that I think your Lost Laowai site looks like it will be extremely helpful to new arrivals once you add more content on there.

In addition to the teaching advice, I suggest adding a couple of sections about daily life. It seems that people moving to a foreign country always want to know: 1) What should I pack? 2)Can I get X (product) in X (province)? 3. How much does X (common expense such as groceries, rent, etc.) cost? 4. How much can I save per month?

I’m sure you know the drill….

  4. 🙂 Yeah, I do have the day to day living stuff… and have plans of incorporating an “average costs” chart. It seems a bit weird to me now, but I remember when I was first planning to travel abroad I was looking up absolutely every bit of information I could use to know at least a little of what to expect and average price charts were pretty useful.

Thanks for the advice, and any additional feedback is warmly welcomed. BTW: Checked out your site. Looks good. Remember if you post a good story – submit it to the Hao Hao Report.
